Split, Diocletian's Palace, & Mestrovic Gallery
CROATIA: Split, Diocletian's Palace, & Mestrovic Gallery
We never dreamed we would be able to visit a beautiful old country such as Croatia.

Our memorable day exploring Split starts upon arrival at the pier, for a two-hour walking tour around his extraordinary city, beginning at the Diocletian's Palace.

Located in the heart of Old Split, this 4th century palace, built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in preparation for his retirement in 305 AD, is a maze of narrow cobbled lanes and large open courtyards that feature striking stone columns. The palace has a colorful history: after the destruction of Salona in the 7th century, refugees made their home in the palace which even today features fortified walls, underground rooms, and watchtowers.

Built from local white limestone and Egyptian granite, the Palace gives access to Diocletian's mausoleum in St. Dominus's Cathedral next door. We will likely be enthralled by this incredible building, named after Saint Duje the patron saint of Split, which features a glorious bell-tower that was constructed in 1100 AD. We will gaze upon the original sacral objects, paintings, and manuscripts and if we're feeling energetic, we will attempt to climb the stairs for amazing views of the city and Adriatic sea.

While in Split, we will have time to tour the Temple of Jupiter, a 13-century old structure, which features wonderful stone columns. We will also be able to explore the People's Square and Old Town and its many exciting sights and sounds.

Next we will take a short ride ot the Mestrovic Gallery. Ivan Mestrovic is considered Crotia's greatest sculptor and today his former estate - an elegant neo-classical villa designed by Mestrovic himself in the 1930's - is home to a museum and gallery.

After enjoying the 192 sculptures as well as drawings, paintings, and architectural plans, it will be time for a leisurely drive through the pine-forests to Radman's Mills which sits by the rolling Cetina River. We will gaze out across the giant old mill wheels and ancient sun dial while we enjoy a leisurely hour-long table service lunch at a wonderful restaurant which offers many regional specialties. We will get to try some local delicacies - fish is a local favorite - and even sample some wines from the area.

We will enjoy our time after lunch wandering through the mill, along the river, and past the beautiful surrounding areas before beginning our journey back to our ship, having made wonderful new memories and friends.

Athens, Acropolis, Plaka, & Temple of Poseidon
GREECE: Athens, Acropolis, Plaka, & Temple of Poseidon
Athens is one of the most well-known cities in Greece, and we are very excited to learn more about Steve's heritage!

We will begin at the heart of Athens where the Acropolis dominates the landscape. Our guided walking tour begins as we climb the 80 steep steps through the Propylaea, the monumental marble gateway to the Acropolis. Once at the top, we'll be rewarded with spectacular views of Athens below.

Beyond the Propylaea, on the highest point of the Acropolis, stands the Parthenon, one of the greatest monuments of ancient civilization and a perfect representation of Doric-style architecture. Dedicated to the virgin goddess Athena, the white Pentelic marble temple was built 446 - 437 B.C. An enduring symbol of ancient Grece, the Parthenon has survived the passage of time, and its architectural sophistication still impresses all who study it.

On the north side of the Acropolis lays the Erectheum. This sacred site is where it is said it was decided which god would rule the city. When Poseidon thrust his trident into the ground, water burst forth, but when Athena touched the ground with her spear and an olive tree grew, she was named ruler of the city. On the south side of the building, we will discover the Porch of the Caryatids or Porch of the Maidens. These graceful structures are engineered to support the weight of the roof on the slender neck of each female figure.

Our route to Plaka will take us past the Old Olympic Stadium for a brief photo opportunity. This marble stadium was built to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

Once in Plaka, we'll brose the historic shopping district. A wonderful hot and cold buffet lunch will be served midday and includes a glass of wine and Greek pastries for dessert. Refreshed, we'll embark on a scenic one-hour drive down Attica's rugged western coast, taking in views of rocky coves and the deep-blue Saronic Gulf as we make our way to Cape Sounion.

Built on a cliff, the Temple of Poseidon looms majestically over the Aegean Sea. We'll walk up the steep path to the 5th-century B.C. temple dedicated to the sea god. Built as an ancient site of worship, 15 of the original 34 white marble Doric columns remain. The setting is known to have inspired poet Lord Byron and a close look at the columns reveals his name chiseled into the marble, dating back to his first visit to Greece.

Our return drive to port is an opportunity to discuss with our fellow travelers the fascinating sites we will have seen throughout the day.

Corfu Town & Cooking Lessons
GREECE: Corfu Town & Cooking Lessons
We have always loved Greek food, and learning how to cook it in Greece seems like a dream come true!

We will begin by driving through the fertile countryside of Corfu to a traditional Greek restaurant in Ropa Valley.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, we will sample ouzo, the traditional Greek aperitif, accompanied by Corfu olives, feta cheese, and village bread. We will observe demonstrations of traditional Greek cooking and learn how to prepare a classic menu, including tzaziki (cucumbers, garlic, yogurt), taramosalata (made with codfish roe), horiatiki (Greek salad), and moussaka (layers of minced beef with vegetables and white bechamel sauce). Then we will sit down to this traditional feast accompanied by wine, fruit, and coffee.

With a delicious meal and a satisfying lesson behind us, we will drive to the Old Fortress. During the period of the 6th and 13th century A.D., Corfu stood within the fortifications of the Old Fortress. Built by the Byzantines, it was reinforced by the Venetians and later by the British. Although much has been destroyed, the Venetian insignia still remains, as do the lower ramparts and a steel bridge that connects the fortress to the city.

Our next stop is Corfu Town. Best seen on foot, the old town is a mixture of the medieval and the modern. During our guided tour, a brief stop will be made at the Old Town for a photo opportunity of the Esplanade (planted with palms and eucalyptus by the French), the English cricket pitch, and the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, once home to Corfu's British rulers.

Our tour concludes with a relaxing drive through the colonial town passing the New Fortress. We will continue past the old Governor's mansion and Esplanade Square and return to the pier. We look forward to feeding our future family with the delicious recipes we have learned to make during our visit to Corfu.

Delos, Island Drive, & Mykonos Walking Tour
GREECE: Delos, Island Drive, & Mykonos Walking Tour
Mykonos is going to be an adventure, and we cannot wait to see the windmills of Little Venice.

We will begin our tour at the spectacular island of Delos. Located at the center of the Cyclades island group, Delos was perfectly positioned to become an important trade center in the Mediterranean. Today the island is uninhabited, but it was once a hub of activity and an important site of religious significance. According to Greek Mythology, Delos is the birthplace of Apollo, and people came from around the world to this ancient site to pay homage to the God of music, beauty, and light. In the early 19th century, a dramatic excavation uncovered beautiful artifacts, mosaics, statues, and buildings.

Our walking tour begins at the first monument, the Agora of the Competialists. This open area has a round shrine where offerings were placed. We will also see the Sacred Way, which leads to the Sanctuary of Apollo. The road is lined with marble platforms, which once held spectacular statues donated by kings.

We will continue to the Sanctuary of Apollo, known as the heart of Delos. At one time, three great temples as well as other altars stood in dedication to the god. In this area we will see the base of the marble Statue of Apollo. Parts of this statue are housed in the Delos museum, which we will visit during our free time.

Next stop is the Lion District, named for the famous Terrace of the Lions, where nine elegant marble lions once guarded the sanctuary area. The outdoor lioins are now replicas, but inside the museum we will be able to see five weathered originals.

Upon return to Mykonos, we will board our motorcoach for a scenic drive through the rocky countryside to visit the charming village of Ano Mera at the center of the island, home to the lovely Panagia Tourliani Monastery. Originally built in 1542 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, its impressive architecture, whitewashed exterior, and colored dome have long charmed visitors from around the world.

After a full morning of touring, lunch with wine will be served for us at a local leading venue. A welcome respite to our day is a stop at Kalafatis Beach, where the deep blue Aegean Sea and gold sand will beckon us for a short stroll in the sunshine.

Next we will return to Mykonos for a guided walking tour. Mykonos is a picturesque town with a labyrinth-like maze of tiny streets, white houses, and red-roofed churches. It may be small, but Mykonos is one of the most cosmopolitan towns of the Aegean. But despite the many shops, boutiques, and stylish cafes, the town has not lost its charm and the island's strict building regulations have kept its Cycladic architectural style beautifully intact. Our guided walking tour through the narrow, winding streets will introduce us to some of the area's most treasured landmarks.

Looking up, we will be able to see windmills dotting the landscape. Although no longer operational, they hearken back to the days when the area was once an agricultural powerhouse. We will have our cameras ready to photograph Little Venice, famous for its narrow rows of brightly colored homes that literally sit in the sea. A timeless subject for artists, Little Venice is considered one of the most romantic spots in the Greek Isles. And no tour of Mykonos would be complete without an opportunity to take a photo of Paraportiani Church. Paraportiani is actually five churches, four comprise its base and the fifth is built as the dome on the top.

At the completion of our tour, we will continue sightseeing on our own, especially on the look-out for Petros the Pelican, the island's mascot.

Domain Mercouri Winery & Wine Tasting
GREECE: Domain Mercouri Winery & Wine Tasting
We enjoy wine greatly, and are ecstatic to have the chance to visit a beautiful winery in Greece!

First we will head inland through some of the small farming villages of the Elis plain. Our drive brings us to the Domain Mercouri Winery, one of the area's oldest wineries. Its prolific history dates back to the late 1800s, when Corinthian currants were its main crop. Today, the estate is renowned for age-old nectar and rich olive oil.

Picturesque and serene, the estate is home to vineyards and olive groves, an Italiante reisdence, a winery, offices and a visitor center, and lush gardens with an ivy-covered stone chapel. A traditional family museum offers an impressive collection of antique agricultural implements and artifacts. The crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea are a stone's throw away from the nearby vineyards, and in the distance, the island of Zakynthos, the third largest of the Ionian islands, is in view.

Upon arrival, we will meet the owners of the estate. We will tour the winery and sample rare and prize-winning white and red wines and enjoy a local snack or two. Wine and olive oil will be available for us to purchase, allowing us to savor the taste of the estate long after we depart.

Our trip to the Domain Mercouri Winery promises to be one of our most treasured memories.

Oia, Fira, Winery, & Prehistoric Museum
GREECE: Oia, Fira, Winery, & Prehistoric Museum
One of the destinations we have most been looking forward to on our cruise is the island of Santorini. On this excursion, we will begin in the picturesque village of Oia.

Pronounced "Eee-ah," the village is perched high stop the cliffs of Santorini's northern terminus. Known for its quiet beauty and spectacular sunsets, this spot boasts breathtaking views of neighboring volcanoes. We will stroll through the narrow, cobblestone lanes, viewing the brilliantly whitewashed buildings, shops, sun-bathed cafes, and blue-domed churches. The natural beauty and tranquility of Oia's landscape has inspired artists from around the world, and numerous galleries can be found in the area.

The next stop on our itinerary is dramatic Mt. Prophet Elijah, which offers panoramic views as far as the eye can see. The highest point on the island, 2,000 feet above sea level, Mt. Prophet Elijah is located between the villages of Pyrgo and Kamari and shares its peak with a monastery of the same name. Today, it contains a collection of artifacts and religious icons from the Greek Orthodox religion.

We will then continue on to the oldest family-run winery on the island for an opportunity to sample the fruit of the local vine. We will tour the unique vineyards and learn the history of wine production on the island, which dates back as far as 1700 BC. Assyrtiko grapes are the leading variety grown, as they thrive in the rich, volcanic soil and microclimate. White wines produced here have an appealing citrus aroma while the dessert wines are barrel-aged for a minimum of two years and are celebrated for their smooth palate and golden honey color.

A superb restaurant is the venue for our traditional Greek lunch, a wonderful opportunity to sample the foods of the region and the fresh ingredients native to the area.

Refreshed, we will visit the awesome Santorini caldera, formed 3,500 years ago after a monumental volcanic explosion in the Aegean Sea. From our viewpoint, we will experience unparalleled views of this geological wonder and the surrounding natural beauty.

A short drive to the cosmopolitan resort area of Kamari Village introduces us to the famed black sand beaches of Santorini. We will have a brief opportunity to put our toes in the hot sand and to capture this stunning phenomenon in photographs.

We will then step inside the Prehistoric Museum and be transported back in time. Located in Fira, the island's capital, the museum's display features fine pottery, figurines, and carvings ranging from the 25th to the 1st century BC. Many of the items on view are artifacts recovered from the archeological site of Akrotiri, Santorini's "Pompeii."

Fira is known for its striking mix of Cycladic and Venetian architecture. The main square of Fira is "Plateia Theotokopoulou," a colorful meeting place. After some free time to check out the local fare, we will return to our cruise ship with full and happy hearts.

Olympia & Archaeological Museum
GREECE: Olympia & Archaeological Museum
We are so desirous to see the temples and statues of Olympia, detailing the images of the Greek gods who inspired Steve's ancestors thousands of years ago.

Our tour begins as we board our motorcoach at the harbor bustling with brightly painted fishing boats, and drive towards the gateway to Olympia. Along the way, we will pass the modern region of Pyrgos and travel through the countryside between the Alfios and Klados Rivers.

Our first destination is the ancient Olympia Archaeological Site. Our walking tour of the chief ruins will initially take us to the Temple of Zeus, where a gold and ivory statue of the god once stood. Although just a chaotic heap of ruins today, the dimensions of the temple are truly impressive. Only a bit smaller than the Parthenon in Athens, it was a classic temple in the Doric style, built in the 5th century B.C.

The statue, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was crafted by the great sculptor Pheidias. The original was 44 feet high and lavishly decorated with Zeus on a throne of ivory and gold, holding a statue of Nike in his right hand, and a scepter with an eagle in his left.

We will also see the Heraion or Temple of Hera, wife of Zeus, and the ruins of the great Stadium, its marble starting blocks still standing in position. The site is where more than 40,000 spectators would fill the stadium to witness contests ranging from foot races to the pentathlon, and after nearly 1,500 years, the 2004 Olympic Games held the shot-put contest.

Minutes away, we will enter the Olympian Archaeological Museum. Artifacts from the sanctuary of the Olympian Zeus, unearthed in over a century of excavation, are on display. We will view two rich pediments from the Temple of Zeus, the long triangular groups that appeared just below the peaked roof, depicting scenes commemorating Pelops' chariot race and illustrating the mythical war between the Centaurs and the Lapiths. Also on display are Hermes of Praxiteles, the Winged Victory of Palonios - the figure inscribed on all the 2004 Olympic medals - and a helmet inscribed "Militiades," the name of the commander whose forces defeated the Persians at Marathon.

Our tour concludes with a scenic drive back to the harbor. With Katakolon behind us, we leave with a myriad of unforgettable memories of a lifetime.

Doge's Palace & Gondola Ride
ITALY: Doge's Palace & Gondola Ride
Emily is unbelievably thrilled to be returning to her favorite city in Italy, and Steve is eagerly anticipating a visit to see all the wonderful sites he has heard about from her!

The Floating City of Venice is really a series of 117 small islands linked by the famous canals, together making up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Departing from our ship, we will board a water transport for a scenic ride along the Giudecca canal to city center. Here we will enjoy the quintessential Venetian experience, a gondola ride along some of Venice's less trafficked canals.

For centuries, gondolas and the traditionally clad gondoliers have been fixtures cruising the water raodways to the city. Until very recently, the role of the gondolier was a guild-trade passed down from father to son (Venice got its first guild-approved female gondolier in 2009). This will truly be a unique experience for us filled with fantastic scenery that speaks for itself.

After our gondola ride, we will walk to the famed St. Mark's square, or Piazza San Marco. The breath-taking piazza is considered to be among the most beautiful in the world. We will arrive to a square crowded with people and pigeons, and filled with music. Within the Square is the spectacular St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, our next stop.

Not only the home of the Doge, Venice's elected ruler, the Palace was also the city's seat of government for centuries, and where some of the most important decisions for Venice's, and even Europe's destiny took place. Transgressions were taken very seriously. Thus, the Bridge of Sighs was built to link the Palace directly to the city's prison dungeons. A look at the bridge reveals two small windows. These windows provided prisoners their last look at Venice before being locked up. The bridge's name comes from the prisoners' sighs of despair.

Built more like a castle than a palace, the Palace's orante facade is a classic example of Venetian gothic architecture. As we tour its stunning interior, we will get to see the famous Golden Staircase, the Great Council Chamber, and paintings by such masters as Tintoretto and Veronese.

As if the Palace wasn't dazzling enough, our next stop will be truly sparkling. We will leave the Doge's Palace and take a short walk to the Murano Glass Factory Showroom. The unique beauty of Venetian's glass has been in demand worldwide since 1291. Here, in the heart of Venice, we will get to see a demonstration of the ancient craft of glass blowing as well as shop for pieces for our own collection.

After a day filled with incredible experiences and lifetime memories, we will re-board our motor launch for a scenic return to our ship.

Evening Venetian Gondola Ride with Serenade
ITALY: Evening Venetian Gondola Ride with Serenade
As a fitting end to our honeymoon we could think of nothing better than to take a romantic nighttime gondola ride.

We will admire the stunning beauty of St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace as we walk to the gondola landing at the city center. Once there, we will board our sleek black gondola, share a bottle of Prosecco sparkling wine, and embark for the ultimate Venetian experience - a romantic evening cruise along some of the city's less trafficked canals.

Sipping our wine, we will sail under the ancient stone bridges that cross the water while the light dwindles from the sky, lengthening the shadows and enhancing the city's beauty. We will cruise past the Renaissance and Baroque building and palaces that line the canal's banks.

Our tour concludes as we return to the landing for our motor launch ride back to our ship. During our short return, we will savor this event of a lifetime, reliving memories time and time again.

Florence, Pisa, Statue of David, & Uffizi Museum
ITALY: Florence, Pisa, Statue of David, & Uffizi Museum
We feel blessed to be visiting Florence, one of Italy's most artistically significant cities and arguably the seat of the Renaissance. Once in the city, we will start our guided walking tour as part of this excursion, heading toward the Historic Center of Florence and the Galleria dell'Accademia and the Uffizi Museum and Gallery, home to some of the greatest masterpieces in the world.

The Accademia was once the world's first art school and is now the home of one of the greatest sculptures of all time - David by Michelangelo. While we will also see a replica of the statue in the Piazza della Signoia, the original is truly breathtaking. Sculpted between 1501 and 1504, it stands over 13 feet all, and is spectacular in its detail.

From the Accademia, we will head to the Piazza del Duomo and one of Florence's most recognizable landmarks - the Duomo, or "The Dome" that graces the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Consecrated in 1436, it's the fourth largest church in the world.

The piazza is also home to the Baptistery, one of the oldest buildings in the city, thought to date back to the 4th century. The Baptistery is renowned for its three sets of artistically important bronze doors featuring relief sculptures of scenes from the Bible, as well as its fine 13th Century mosaics and other masterpieces.

We will then travel to the Piazza Della Signoria, the political heart of the city from the Middle Ages to the present day. Within the square we will see some of the world's most renowned statues holding court. From here, we will walk to the renowned Uffizi Museum and Gallery. As one of the oldest and most famous museums of the Western world, it's rivaled only by the Louvre in its collection of Renaissance masterpieces including such notable works as Leonardo da Vinci's The Annunciation, Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, and Rembrandt's self-portraits.

Continuing our adventure, we'll take a scenic ride through the Tuscan countryside, stopping at a luxury restaurant to enjoy a delicious first-class meal.

Finally, we'll continue our journey as we travel to Pisa, arriving at the Piazza dei Miracoli, or Square of Miracles. Sculptures and monuments, most notably the famous Leaning Tower, dominate the square.

As we enjoy a scenic drive back to our cruise ship, we wil take with us a lifetime of memories.

Pompeii, Sorrento, & Capri
ITALY: Pompeii, Sorrento, & Capri
We cannot wait to see the unbelievable ruins in Pompeii, the beautiful beaches of Capri, and the quiet peacefulness of Sorrento. Our tour begins with a ride from Naples to the Pompeii ruins. We will have an opportunity en route to stop at a cameo factory where artisans apply skills handed down for generations, intricately carving seashell or coral into beautiful jewelry - true works of art and beautiful keepsake souvenirs.

Once at Pompeii, we will discover the archeological excavations of a lost city buried deep beneath the ash when Mt. Vesuvius violently erupted in 79 AD. It was a monumental natural disaster that killed thousands and entombed the city under ash. We will explore the grounds of the excavated city as our guide talks about the remarkably preserved remains that hint at daily life - their customs, buildings, and cuisine; how they entertained, decorated, and lived. The eruption of Vesuvius preserved a moment in time more than 2,000 years ago, so that we may learn about the lives of the ancient Romans.

Pompeii before the eruption was known as a vacation community for high society. It had a forum, ampitheater, gymnasium, shops, and an aqueduct that delivered water for irritation, fountains, and private baths. Some of the ruiins are remarkably preserved with elaborately detailed mosaics and colorful frescoes decorating the interiors of wealthy homeowners' villas.

We will then travel to the charming village of Sorrento which overlooks the Bay of Naples and offers breathtaking views. In Sorrento, we will enjoy an authentic lunch using seasonal ingredients of the Campania region at a local restaurant. Our lunch is immediately followed by time for a stroll down to the Sorrento Pier. Corso Italia is Sorrento's flower-lined main boulevard where we will find local shops, designer boutiques, and cafes.

The next leg of our tour continues on the stunningly beautiful isle of Capri. Upon arrival in the city of Capri, we will likely visit the Gardens of Augustus. This lush garden setting is situated atop a sheer cliff and provides a striking vantage point where we can take in the dramatic views of the turquoise sea below and the Faraglioni stacks, three rock pinnacles formed over time by erosion from the wind and sea.

Our tour concludes with a cruise back to Naples via a hydrofoil/jet boat ride with stunning views of the coastline as we sit back, relax, and enjoy the sea breeze.
