MILL
VALLEY, Calif.
- When Alexa and Don Mercer got married, they didn't bother registering
with the traditional registries.
"We'd
lived together for two years and had already bought the housekeeping
stuff we needed," explains Alexa.
Instead,
the Mercers registered with HoneyLuna, the Honeymoon Registry Service,
and became part of a growing trend of couples seeking non-traditional
wedding gifts. Nearly 80 percent of the guests at the Mercers' wedding
gave gifts from the couple's honeymoon itinerary by selecting gifts
from the couple's registry.
"Parts of our honeymoon included staying at a fifteenth century
farmhouse outside Avignon, France, and having a biking picnic through
the French countryside with castles tours along the way," says Alexa.
HoneyLuna
is the first registry service to focus solely on honeymoon travel
as wedding gifts.
Nancy Bomace, HoneyLuna
CEO
Nancy Bombace, CEO and founder of HoneyLuna, started the HoneyLuna
in 1995 after leaving a career in business management. When she
got engaged and realized she didn't need toaster or blenders, she
hit upon the idea for her business. At the time, she and her then-fiancé
dreamed of an extended honeymoon in Europe. The Bombaces created
their own honeymoon registry and had about 60 percent of their honeymoon
paid for by wedding.
"HoneyLuna is the first registry service to focus solely on honeymoon
travel as wedding gifts," says Bombace. "It provides couples with
a unique option for wedding gifts."
HoneyLuna
has experienced a marked increase in clients as more couples are
discovering HoneyLuna and learning about the honeymoon registry
alternative. To address this growth, the company found the need
to provide more efficient and secure Internet services.
The
original HoneyLuna site was launched in 1998. However, the company
recently secured venture capital to help renovate the site using
more efficient and interactive technologies. Site upgrades include
secure online shopping, customizable registries, e-mail history
tracking and registry status reports for wedding couples.

HoneyLuna's
unique online honeymoon registry service helps newlyweds looking
for nontraditional wedding gifts pay and plan for the honeymoon
of their dreams.
Nancy Bombace,
HoneyLuna CEO and founder
"With our newly launched site, www.HoneyLuna.com,
we can continue to give our customers the unique and personalized
service that HoneyLuna's success is built on," Bombace says. "The
upgrade to our site allows us to provide faster, more efficient
service to our couples."
Couples working with HoneyLuna can arrange their honeymoon, including
airline tickets, hotels, meals, activities and more. The company
handles the arrangements and creates a customized registry list,
complete with gift descriptions and items in all price ranges. For
couples working with their own agent or arranging their own travel,
HoneyLuna creates and administers the registry portion of the couple's
honeymoon.
HoneyLuna
also gives the couple registry cards to give to guests. Guests contact
HoneyLuna-via the Internet or a toll-free number to purchase items
from the registry. HoneyLuna sends gift acknowledgments to inform
couples of the gift purchases. Gift givers choose whether to have
the acknowledgments mailed to the couple, e-mailed, or sent to them
to present to the couple. A setup fee is charged to each couple
and a service fee is added to each honeymoon gift purchased by guests.
Since inception, HoneyLuna has planned honeymoons for couples desiring
traditional as well as exotic itineraries. In addition to the popular
destinations of Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Tahiti, HoneyLuna
has arranged safaris in Africa, trekking in Thailand, and a 10-month,
around-the-world honeymoon. Bombace says couples typically find
that 50 to 70 percent of their honeymoon is paid for if they register
exclusively with HoneyLuna.
According to Bombace, the new funding has also allowed the company
to expand its national advertising efforts in bridal magazines and
launch an extensive affiliate and partnership program on the new
site.
Alexa Mercer believes the time has come for a registry like HoneyLuna.
She has recommended the idea to several soon-to-be-married friends.
By using HoneyLuna for their own honeymoon registry, Alexa says
their honeymoon "became a trip of a lifetime."
